About Write Despite!

So if you’ve landed on this blog, you must be interested in doing some serious writing. Hey, so are we! And we’re glad you’re here.

We are Karen and Cathy, and we’ve decided to work on our newest projects by finally taking the advice of all our writing teachers and our favorite authors. You know, the ones who tell you to “Write every day!”

‘Write every day … with a pen that’s shaped like a candy cane.’

―David Sedaris

“I only write when I am inspired. Fortunately I am inspired at 9 o’clock every morning.”

―William Faulkner

“If I waited till I felt like writing, I’d never write at all.”

―Anne Tyler

“In twenty years I’ve never had a day when I didn’t have to think about someone else’s needs. And this means the writing has to be fitted around it.”
―Alice Munro

Every day, every day, every day I write the book”

 ―Elvis Costello

With this in mind, we’re going to launch a simple and possibly insane project:

We’re Going to Write Every Single Day.

For at Least 20 Minutes.

For One Year.

At least once a week we’ll blog about our progress—how we’re writing, where we’re writing, what obstacles presented themselves to try to keep us from writing (other people’s needs be damned!) We’ll offer up quotes, tips, links, prompts, and various inspirations to keep the words coming. Check out our resources. Feel free to suggest others. Please.

At the end of one year, we’ll see if we’ve accumulated anything of worth, if we’ve gotten ourselves into a real writing habit, if we agree that this writing every day thing is, in fact, all it’s cracked up to be.

Sound like a good idea? Want to test your devotion to your craft? Genre doesn’t matter. We invite writers of all stripes—devotees of fiction, poetry, nonfiction—whatever does it for you, works for us. We’re starting January 1, 2013–new year, new opportunities. But you can start whenever you like, and work from there.

Now we know what you’re thinking. Well, we can guess. So we’ve created these nifty FAQs just for the occasion.

Still interested?

Then join us.

Write along with your own work, draw inspiration, tell us how it’s going.

Bitch, moan, compare notes.

And let’s see what we can do in 20/365.

Gather your ideas and your courage.

WRITE DESPITE began for us on:

When will YOU begin?

  1. What a great idea. This rocks!

  2. So awesome! I’m in. Thanks for coming up with the challenge and inviting others to join.

  3. I am a new author, and still learning so much. However, the past few weeks have taught me just how easy it is to get away from writing, and to lose focus and even the desire to write. The need for a daily goal has weighed heavily on my mind this past week, and then I stumbled across your page. Word counts discourage me, especially when I get blocked, or have to do more research than writing. I can do 20 minutes. I’m in!

  4. So glad to see all of you on board! Thanks for making this journey with us. Happy holidays to all, and see you on January 1!

  5. Thanks to all of you for coming on board. Have a great holiday and see you on January 1!

  6. I’ll be following you progress and cheering you on.

  7. Great idea! Much-needed!

  8. I’m into writing lyrics and this is a great motivator.

  9. So glad you’ve all joined in. Thanks for the support and best of luck with your writing!

  10. After blogging about not setting super-specific goals after a stress-filled 2012, I think I’m in. I can do 20 minutes, it will keep me going, and I’m going to commit for a week at a time. How’s that?

PS – your FAQs are hilarious!

  11. I read about this at Women’s Fiction Writers. Is there a blog badge or sign up list?

    • No blog badge as yet, but that’s a great idea. For now, you can follow us by clicking on “Follow Write Despite via Email” above. We’re also on Facebook (www.facebook.com/write.despite) and Twitter @write_despite. Thanks so much for mentioning us on YOUR blog today!!! Best of luck with your writing!

  12. Good luck with your goal. It’s my goal too.

  13. So, joining a bit late (but only because I just discovered it today!), but I’m in! Starting tomorrow because it’s late and I’m an exhausted mother of a newborn. 🙂

    • Holy cow! Kudos to you, Kris. We bow at your feet. And there is no joining late–start when you start, and work from there. We wish you much luck, and strength, and caffeine. Congratulations!!!

  14. Anyone who writes with a newborn in the house is my personal hero! – Karen

I rarely take the time to just write but I do read a lot (my goal is 2 books a week). But I’m in. It’s time to turn a new leaf.

  16. Great idea and thanks for sharing the encouragement … I just saw this (day 12), but will work on it…I think I am going to do a modified version (if you can forgive me), and do 20 minutes a week to start…if this disqualifies me from the “club”, I accept it; otherwise, I’m in…and I appreciate what you are doing!

Best Wishes! check in later (hmmm….on second thought, if I keep droning on here, this could qualify as my day’s “20” !!!!) :o) Linda

  17. I’ve tried to follow the blog, but when I click the Follow button, I get a message that it didn’t succeed. And there’s no place to put my email address. Any other way I should be doing this?

    • So sorry you’re having trouble. I ran a search for this issue and did come across someone who had the same problem. Another WordPress user suggested using Firefox or Chrome browsers. I know I’ve had some trouble managing this blog myself using Explorer, and Google Chrome definitely works best for me. It lso might help to empty your cache and cookies, etc. You can read about it here: : http://en.support.wordpress.com/browser-issues/. I hope this helps, but please let us know if you’re still having any problems! –Cathy

  18. I’ve nominated this blog for the Liebster Award. For details, please visit http://sweatercursed.blogspot.com
